In Charley Harper’s Birch Bark and Birds, small blue nuthatches forage in birch trees, “up, down and all around the bark of trees probing for larvae and beetles.” Charley liked the graphic possibilities the bark of birch trees presented and he used them for many of his compositions. Here, they’re the central focus, while the birds add a sense of scale and a pleasing dash of color. Originally painted in 2005, Birch Bark and Birds explodes the design to mural scale, recreating the forests that so entranced Charley.
Birch Bark and Birds is compatible with the by-the-yard product Birch Bark Stripe, which features several birch trees without their avian companions.
