Jeffrey Fisher’s Birdlandia was born from a life-long love of birds, and an extensive history of painting them. As a child in Melbourne, he belonged to the Gould League of Bird Lovers—dedicated to the celebration and protection of birds—winning a gold star in a competition for his rendition of a kookaburra. Despite his long-lived love for all things avian, he is unsure he has worked out how to render them adequately, hence the variety of his techniques. His inspirations run from the studied, John James Audubon and Thomas Bewick, to the naive, such as Bill Traylor and Carlo Zinelli, using whatever works best to capture the species in the moment at hand. It is an ongoing quest.
