Homegrown was born in an animation Brian Rea collaborated on with the great Pablo Delcan, based on the poem “Historical Fragment” by Éireann Lorsung. In the poem, playing cards are “stuck in hedges” while in the video, the cards become the hedges—the spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs all flora. Brian extended the concept. “I tend to use a lot of repetitive mark making and lines in my work to build texture—over an entire wall this repetition should create a whole new landscape.” This topography is firmly rooted in his new California home—the gardens, mountains, oceans, deserts—the light. “It seems natural that the environment in which I work has now become the environment within the work.”
